THE ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY 3rd EDITION 2023

John Wiley & Sons, New York 2023 (432 p)

THIS EDITION WAS SELECTED AMONG THE BEST ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BOOKS OF ALL TIME BY THE BOOKAUTHORITY (2023-2024)  and other FOUR meaningful AWARDS (see below)

This book covers subjects of advanced organic chemistry aimed at late undergraduate and graduate level. Specially useful in the area of Problem Solving Strategies,  the previous editions have been used as the textbook for courses specifically designed for developing these skills. While instructors can profit from theoretical chapters and extensive problem analysis of organic reaction mechanisms of dium to high complexity,  it can also serve as a stand-alone workbook for individual students or for group discussions and brain storming seminar sessions.

Organic chemistry professionals and researchers may also enrich their problem analysis prowess through improving their brain capabilities to tackle the many questions posed by advanced solving strategies. The author has designed choice sequences compiled in easily understandable flowcharts.

This new edition retains the structure of previous editions divided in two main sections: The Toolbox and The Problems Chest.

The four chapters in theToolbox display an expanded content of theoretical grounds of organic reaction mechanisms and analysis including more electron flow and redeployment resources, stereochemical allowances and  constraints, molecular orbital calculations, molecular mapping the author calls comparative molecular fragmentation analysis and other  strategies for an enhanced understanding of reaction mechanism

In addition to reaction problems embedded in the first section The Problem Chest contains a collection of 50 fully discussed mechanism riddles ordered in  complexity level. All of them have been carefully selected from current research from several countries published in prestigious journals  From the belabored discussions more than one feasible mechanism often emerges as alternatives to the research authors' proposal, thus expanding the number of reaction pathway possibilities that demand more detailed theoretical or experimental exploration.

THE ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, 2nd Edition - 2014

John Wiley & Sons, New York 2014 (450 p)

THIS EDITION WAS SELECTED AMONG THE BEST ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BOOKS OF ALL TIMES BY THE BOOK AUTHORITY (2015)

This long-awaited new edition helps students understand and solve the complex problems that organic chemists regularly face, using a step-by-step method and approachable text. With solved and worked-through problems, the author orients discussion of each through the application of various problem-solving techniques. An excellent approach to planning organic synthesis and undestanding reaction mechanism through practice with 60 new, fully discussed problems extracted from current research literature.

Among them, problem Nº 60 is the most challenging I have come across, as you and other people will find most amusing.

THE ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, 1st Edition - 1987

John Wiley & Sons, New York 1987 (324 p)

Over the years I developed and class-tested some essential techniques to make organic reaction mechanisms more accessible to anyone with a mid level of this science, This approach, which is applicable to highly complex reaction mechanisms as well, is described in the first six sections of chapter I. Then, a collection of 53 fully solved problems with scores of  impressive illustrations (from  pre-computer drawing tools days) ecompasing a rather large number of reaction types put these problem solving techniques on a testing ground. After reading and working it out you will muster a unique mastery in problem solving at an advanced levels others will envy. If you move on to the Second Edition (2014) and The Third Edition you should master even the most mind-tearing reaction mechanisms and a pro in this demandin skill, so seeked for in all branches of science.

TANNINS AND PHENOLICS IN ANIMAL NUTRITION : Chemistry and Challenges. Nova Science Publishers, New York. 2011, pp 144 + index / UK edition

Among other natural products, polyphenolics are for the most part plant defenses. They inhibit protein digestion, bind to essential minerals and alter nurient absorption through the intestinal wall. Tannins also inhibit ruminal bacteria in charge of digeting carbohydrate fibers into digestible sugars and other products, affecting nutrient potential of animal feed. On the other hand, some of these polyphenolics can have the opposite effect, acting as antioxidants and modulators of pathogen populations in the digestive tract of animals. This book reviews the state of the art (2010) of tannins and phenolics from natural sources in the nutrition management of farm animals, from the organic chemistry and nutrition stands.

CEREALS IN TROPICAL AMERICA, MODERN METHODS OF STORAGE & CONSERVATION.

with co-authors: Jorge L. Avila-Nuñez and María P. Calcagno Pissarelli. - (IN SPANISH)

Ediciones del Vicerectorado Académico de la Universidad de Los Andes y de Ediciones Fundación Industrias Polar. Mérida-Caracas, 2009. 450 págs. ISBN: 978-980-11-1261-7.

This book earned the Premio Indices Award at the National Book Festival Caracas - Venezuela  2009

Cereals do not grow as efficiently in the Tropics as in subtropical areas of the world. Climate, relatively constant ligh/dark 12 h daily periods, in addition to a variety of technical and social problems challenge productivity. As a result, most tropical countries need grain imports in large quantity (except rice in the Far East and a few other grain crops in India). This book is the result of 10 years of involvement under contract research of our laboratory. It describes in numbers the current situation (2000-2007) of countries in Tropical America as regards to cereal production, losses and causes. Cnsidering that major losses occur from the impact of grain insects and mycotoxins, emphasis is on new technological developments to increase cereal productivity and conservation from state-of-the-art chemical treatments, including natural products and pheromones.  Detailed descriptions of dozens of grain insects with color pictures for easy identification, and technical specifics for each individual pesticide are included.

Other aspects stemming from our research were contract-bound, and are thus excluded in this edition.
